76 year old, Miriam ‘Mama Africa’ Makeba, has died. The singer passed away after a suspected heart attack on Sunday night after collapsing on stage following a performance in Italy.

Miriam Makeba was a very popular artist and a huge voice for the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa.

Makeba began her signing career during the 1950s and grabbed international attention in 1959 when she starred in the anti-apartheid documentary Come Back, Africa.

It was during a trip to London that she met Harry Belafonte. He would be a big influence on her career and he helped her get entry into the United States, where she released many of her famous songs.

Makeba received a Grammy Award for Best Folk Recording in 1966 with Harry Belafonte for An Evening With Belafonte/Makeba. The very first awarded to a black African woman.

She is perhaps best know in Sweden for the song played on the ‘Panta-Mera’ (Recycle More) advert,  ‘Pata Pata’.

Gone but never forgotten.
