serengeti

Serengeti is comprised of two Swedish girls from Gothenburg who are currently enjoying success in the Swedish charts. Onstage at the Uppsala Reggae Festival 2010 the girls entertained the crowd who cried ‘en gång till’ (one more time) at the end and to the delight of the audience, Serengeti happily obliged.

After their pulsating show had ended, the two sweet, street-clad singers Liza and Stina (Mastercat and True) fought the rain to meet us in the press tent.

Urbanlife are always eager to meet the new generation of Swedish artists and asked about Serengeti’s background and influences.

"When Serengeti first started with reggae-dancehall", explained Stina, "they began in different ways but were heavily influenced by hip-hop". Both felt they didn't have any particular struggles breaking through as women in the reggae world in Sweden, as they have chosen to work with people who share their passion for reggae music.

Their success has been almost instantaneous. Germany particularly loves them and they return there shortly for further performances. Spain eagerly awaits their music not to mention South Africa. This is something both girls are really excited about. They also have on their to-do list, but as yet haven’t covered, a visit to the Mecca of reggae music, Kingston, Jamaica. "This is something we really got to do",  say the girls in unison. "It has been waiting for too long now."

There were many Swedish artists at this year’s festival, and Serengeti feel that Sweden has great reggae potential that is actually at boiling point right now, but they still find it very difficult to get great dancehall music played on the Swedish radio stations. "This is something that definitely should be changed", says Liza

When I asked them if they have ever been to Serengeti, they answer with a shameful giggling "Noooo, we definitely got some things to do", say the girls.
Interestingly their name, Serengeti, was found whilst searching for riddims on the net some time ago, and one of those falling in love riddims was named Serengeti. After further research they discovered that Serengeti meant the great, wide, mystic steps in Africa.

We also like the name and wish them great luck on their musical journey.
