It was quite a unique event, when the first ever Swedish hip-hop opera was performed on Wednesday night at Folkoperan in Stockholm. Adapted from the newly released and ground-breaking book 'Afrosvensk i det nya Sverige’ (a collection of personal recounts of growing up in Sweden by Afro-svensk/Swedish young people/youth, collected by author and chairman/employed at Afrosvenskarnas riksförbund, Cecilia Gärding) came to life in front of a filled and exhilarated auditorium.
Performed in a classroom context, a teacher versus students format, the teacher was excellently portrayed by the versatile soprano singer Ulrika Skarby, who played a teacher unaware of her social and historic faux pas as she attempted to educate a group/class of African-Swedes with different backgrounds.
The stereotype was a reflection that sadly many may recognise in other social situations. The students burst into hip-hop songs as they attempted to educate through music. Pictures projected the uncomfortable truth of Sweden's involvement in the old slave trade, colonialism and added a powerful element to the show.

Idag släpptes hela programmet för Stockholm Jazz Fest 2010. Det är med stor glädje som Urbanlife kan konstatera att årets toppnamn är Missy Elliot. Den 12 juni kliver hon upp på Skeppsholmens stora scen.
Missy Elliot är en av hiphopens mest kreativa artister, och med över 22 miljoner sålda album så är hon även en av genrens mest framgångsrika. Hon har producerat och jobbat med artister som Mary J Blige, Lil’ Kim och Madonna.
Men det är framförallt genom samarbetet med producenten Timbaland och r’n’b-sångerskan Aaliyah (som tragiskt omkom i en flygolycka 2001) som Missy Elliot gjorts sig känd för oortodoxa arrangemang och studsiga beats.

Guru and Andy Collins, urbanlife.se at the Stockholm Jazz Festival 2009
Rapper Guru (his real name was Keith Elam), from the famous hip-hop outfit GangStarr, has died from cancer aged 43.
The MC, whose illness was well covered/hidden, suffered a cardiac arrest in February after surgery to treat the disease and briefly lapsed into a coma.
According to the statement posted on the Yo! Promotions website, Guru had tried to "keep his harrowing diagnosis private" and died on the morning of Monday, 19 April.
Aware of the final failures in treatment, Guru wrote a letter in which he says:
"I have suffered with this illness for over a year."
And furthermore: "I have exhausted all medical options."
"I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting."
The hip-hop artist started, with DJ Premier, the mega group Gang Starr in 1985. And from then on, Guru produced and played with them all: Erykah Badu, Branford Marsalis, Jamiroquai, Donald Byrd, Ramsey Lewis and N’Dea Davenport, just to mention a few!

Den senaste superstjärnan inom hip hop och latin-musik PITBULL (Mr 305) gör sitt enda framträdande i Sverige den 4 maj på Arenan, Fryshuset i Stockholm.
Med sin blandning av Miami Bass, Reggaeton, Hip-Hop, House och karibiska influenser har den Miamibaserade världstjärnan fyllt dansgolven världen över.
Med topphits som Krazy, The Anthem, Hotel Room Service, Shake, Go Girl, I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho) gjorde Pitbull stor succé på sin senaste
Europaturné i höstas och sålde slut på de flesta arenorna.
Nu kommer han till Stockholm och gör sin första, mycket efterlängtade spelning i Sverige.

To run a website about black culture in Sweden and not talk to Anthony Mills would almost count as malpractice. But when Urbanlife set out to interview the highly creative artist we couldn’t get in.
The door was locked!
A broken handle was to blame for that. But as Mr. Mills showed off some craftsman skills, he also unlocked the door to a world where we got to learn about his b(l)ackground, Sweden as a place for creativity, and projects like Super Viral Brothers.
