To run a website about black culture in Sweden and not talk to Anthony Mills would almost count as malpractice. But when Urbanlife set out to interview the highly creative artist we couldn’t get in.

The door was locked!

A broken handle was to blame for that. But as Mr. Mills showed off some craftsman skills, he also unlocked the door to a world where we got to learn about his b(l)ackground, Sweden as a place for creativity, and projects like Super Viral Brothers.
Introducing Anthony Mills to those who aren’t familiar with his work is a bit tricky, because it’s hard to know where to start. This man has painted live on Swedish Television, toured with Harry Belafonte, performed with Leela James and collaborated with artists like Adam Tensta.

But he is best known for the creation of the music genre ghettotrance. Saying it’s just one genre is an understatement though. Within ghettotrance you’ll find everything from African music to hip hop as well as classical music and soul. And you will, most definitely, find poetry, and a poet.

Anthony Mills Artwork
Maybe this is the best word to describe Anthony Mills as a person and an artist. He is a poet and the poetry that he creates comes out as music, as paintings, as thought provoking stories of real life, and as (proved by the man himself on Wednesday evening) some nice grub for your stomach.

More specifically, the nice meal was a “tomato and okra with rice”-recipe that Anthony Mills kindly served with no charge(!) in between the sets of his Barefoot Property unplugged showcase on Wednesday evening this week. Barefoot Property being Anthony Mills’s new afrobeat project, including members from celebrated Swedish afrobeat band Music is the Weapon.

The showcase attracted artists like Eboi and Adam Tensta who came through with large parts of their RMH (Respect My Hustle) crew. For those of you who missed the performance, there are more opportunities coming up soon. Among them, a Barefoot Property concert at Fasching on the 12th of May, previewed by an exhibition of Anthony Mills art.

As you all may have realised, one article isn’t enough to describe and give justice to the work of Anthony Mills. So check out the video interview on
Urbanlife TV and unlock some mo’ info about one of Stockholm’s most famous hidden talents.

That’s what Urbanlife did!
