First, let’s clear something up! Black music isn’t all about drugs, guns and sex. The image of Hip Hop videos, in particular, has influenced impressionable young kids who have, in turn, succumbed to the stereotype in a bid for acceptance and fame. Genres, such as Hip Hop and R&B, have had huge marketing over the years and not all of it has been positive. Therefore, peoples’ perception of ‘black culture’ has become clouded by MTV and street graffiti. A global cloud of negativity and stereotyping surrounds our culture. Urbanlife.se aims to dispel those images. But what exactly do we mean by ‘Black Music’?Black music, to us, simply means the music that has its roots from black culture, or should we say, African culture. African music has been a major factor in the shaping of what we know today as blues and jazz. These styles are all borrowed from African rhythms and sounds, brought over the Atlantic Ocean by slaves. Rock'n'roll music is often explained as having begun with 1940s’ blues music, and with so many genres having branched off from rock - the numerous sub-genres of heavy metal, punk rock, pop music and many more - it can be argued, therefore, that African music has been at the very root of all contemporary music. Today we have: Classic Soul, R&B, Motown, Stax, Black Rock, Jazz Funk, Music, Southern/Northern Soul Music, Neo Soul Music, Doo Wop, Disco, Hip Hop, NuSoul, Slow Jams, Nu Soul, Trip Hop, Grime and so on… As musicians experiment with more and more creativity, it becomes extremely difficult to categorise or point as to which genre a sound should be titled towards. Having a group title makes it easier when describing a style of music you particularly like. Black music isn’t about a colour; it’s about a feeling…the feeling of soul. This also means that Urbanlife.se happily includes ‘white’ artists on its web pages and iPod playlist. Sweden’s top export is music. Even if it isn’t all to our tastes, it has produced world famous Jazz artists and globally popular singers. Sweden, to the surprise of many, also holds Europe’s biggest Reggae festival. So big up us Afro-Swedes!! Even though there's so much music already out there, on a number of websites, it still can be hard to find music that you want to hear. Here at Urbanlife.se, we really want you to hear the enormous amount of music not normally heard in Sweden and reveal music that we know you’ll really love. We’ve split the music up into genres so you should be able to find your way around easier. Also, use the UrbanlifeiPod to hear UrbanlifeMUSIC selected by us and by the DJs who might be playing near you. Urbanlife.se looks to promote and encourage Swedish black music artists of all genres like the Soca Rebels and The Crooked Beat. So please keep us informed if you are also one of them. Now click on a genre on the left and find new music to fill your soul. Enjoy++
