![]() Hollywood? Nah, nah, nah! That is yesterdays news. Nowadays we’re talking Nollywood (Nigeria), Riverwood (Kenya), Ghollywood (Ghana) and Ugawood (Uganda). The African film industry has blossomed over the last years with Nigeria as the frontrunner. So don’t be surprised if future film stars gets their breakthrough in the third largest film industry, Nollywood. Cinemafrica is dedicating their whole “Breakfast cinema” on Sunday the 25th of April to two films sprung out of Ugawood and Nollywood. The first film, Imani (Uganda), follows three youths in their quest to deal with life’s trials and tribulations. We get to know an ex child soldier, a young hip hop dancer, and a maid, and their individual stories is skillfully weaved together. The film is directed by Caroline Kamya and was highlighted earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival. Secondly, Cinemafrica will show the film The Figurine (Nigeria). The movie, a magic-realism tale, is a story about how a group of friends finds the figurine Araromire. The figurine is said to bring seven years of happiness but also seven years of bad luck. Director of The Figurine is one of Nigerias most successful producers, directors and actors, Kunle Afolayan. With his films he has said that he wants to take African films to a higher level. Nine nominees for The Figurine at the African Movie Academy Awards, including Best Film and Best Director, is a sign of that he may have accomplished that. So skip the Holly and the Bolly, and explore some other great ’Woods on the 25th.
