I år är det 13:e gången CinemAfrica filmfestival anordnas i Stockholm! CinemAfrica Filmfestival 2012 invigs drygt ett år efter att den arabiska våren startade och revolutionerna i Nordafrika genomsyrar hela festivalen; många av årets filmer kommer från Tunisien, Egypten, Marocko och Algeriet.

Revolutionerna svepte över Nordafrika under 2011, men frågan är vad som ska ske nu; hur ska man gå vidare? I nära samarbete med Zero Silence arrangerar CinemAfrica ett seminarium med filmvisning, panelsamtal och frågestund under lördagen 24 mars kl. 15-18.

Filmfrukosten 11 december fortsätter på temat kvinnor - nu med fokus på demokratiprocesser och revolution. Hur ersätter man diktatur och kaos med demokrati?
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberias första president, kommer den 10 december att motta Nobels fredspris i Norge. CinemAfrica vill hylla henne genom att visa dokumentären Iron Ladies of Liberia, en film om hennes första tid som president. I Iron Ladies of Liberia får vi följa Ellen Johnson Sirleaf under hennes första turbulenta månader vid makten. Det är en skildring av återuppbyggnaden av ett sargat land och av hur man kan hantera demokratifrågor i kaos. Här handlar det inte om skrivbordslösningar skapade av utvecklingsexperter. Här handlar det om ledarskap, kunskap och empati och om att kavla upp armarna och arbeta.
CinemAfrica visar även We are Watching You, en film om Egypten innan revolutionen januari 2011. Revolutionen i Egypten startades inte på en dag. Det har länge funnits människor och organisationer som kämpat för demokrati. En av dessa är Sharfeen.com – We Are Watching You – en kvinnoorganisation som sedan 2005 med hjälp av kameror, humor och envishet arbetat för att synliggöra diktaturens maktfullkomlighet och dess effekter.
Den tredje filmen The Essence är en animerad kortfilm från Nigeria/Tyskland om kvinnor och kreativ kraft. The Essence är flerfaldigt prisbelönad, bl a vid ANIMAFRIK Animation Festival i Ghana och Silicon Valley African Film Festival i USA.

Here is an exclusive trailer from the incredibly sad and powerful documentary Dark Girls. The documentary explores the deep-seated biases and attitudes about skin colour---particularly dark skinned women, outside of and within the Black American culture.

I really enjoyed the Film breakfast at the CinemAfrica film festival. I regularly attend events like these, and I was pleasantly surprised to see so many there. The program and printed materials set the tone for the festival; my expectations were high on arrival, and they were met and exceeded with quality films, great dialogue, and an ideal theater - Bio Rio at Hornstull in Stockholm. Luckily, an old friend I had not seen in ages motioned for me to join him and his wife, so I actually had the best seat in the house.
More than 400 people gathered to celebrate this year’s CinemAfrica Film Festival at the opening ceremony that was held on March 23 at Sture in Stockholm.
The lobby of the cinema was packed with festival-goers, and the atmosphere was joyful. “This festival is a wonderful place to come and be inspired,” said one festival attendee, Miriam Sio-Ladenius. “For many of us who are of African descent, its good to be able to see films and be reminded that there is another world out there”, she said. “A world that has African actors, African directors, and African stories. These films have cultural importance as well.”
