Stephen Sondheim, multi-Grammy award winning songwriter/composer, wrote a brilliant quirky little song called Send in the Clowns. Folksinger icon Judy Collins recorded the best version of it as far I am concerned. Here are my favorite lines:Isn't it rich? Isn't it queer? Losing my timing this late in my career. And where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns... Well, maybe next year. (Send in the Clowns from A Little Night Music) Yep, there’s that word, timing, again. We’ve all done it, done it and done it again. Said something we knew even before it passed over our lips was Wrong, Wrong, Wrong! Something we’d come to regret and it would most certainly come back to bite us. Somebody please tell me why is it, there are never any clowns around when you really need them? Oh well, it probably is for the best. For how else would we ever learn when to keep our big mouths shut! Or as my mom would say “one of these days your mouth is going to get your behind, in trouble”. (BTW thanks mom.) So the next time you’re about to say something you know you’re are going to regret, that is if you catch it in time, take a quick look around and make sure your clowns are on cue!
