The city of Karlstad in western Sweden will no longer have a neighbourhood called Negern (‘the negro’), the town council decided on Wednesday.
“They’ve come to their senses,” said Kitimbwa Sabuni of the National Afro-Swedish Association (Afrosvenskarnas riksförbund) to the TT news agency.
Karlstad’s Negern neighbourhood has been around for nearly 150 years, but came under fire recently after a private citizen complained that the name was “objectionable, insulting, or just plain rude”.
The council in turn sought guidance on the matter from the National Land Survey of Sweden (Lantmäteriet), which ruled in June that the name should be seen as "exotic and evocative" and represented a part of Sweden's cultural heritage.

Immigrants to Sweden continue to flock to a few, high-immigrant concentration areas, new statistics show, prompting one politician to conclude the country's integration politics have failed.
According to a fresh report from Statistics Sweden (SCB), the number of inhabitants with foreign backgrounds has escalated in all of the country's most immigrant-dense areas over the past ten years.
Employment has increased to some extent in many city districts, and the number of individuals reliant upon government benefits has decreased to an equal degree.
By far the greatest change, however, relates to the concentration of inhabitants with a foreign background, which has increased dramatically in most of the 38 city districts.

A Stockholm Policeman is accused of having abused an African man in connection with a deportation.
After a confrontation a police officer is heard saying to a colleague: "Good to smack a negro"
Police authorities in Stockholm are now investigating the events that occurred August 28 at Bromma airport.
After transporting a group of Africans for deportation from Bromma airport one person suddenly refused to step off the bus and board the airplane. In connection with this, the violence and abuse occurred.
Prosecutor Kay Engfeldt recently downloaded the preliminary investigation in which excessive force has not been established. "Such a statement is contrary to the values that are within the authority. The case is shortly up at the County Police head table, "said Patrik Esfandi, a lawyer in Stockholm Police CU unit.

Notes from the editor: Racism in the Swedish Police is a worrying problem which is has been highlighted before. Unfortunately these matters are not being dealt with and simply ignored. When will the police start a recruitment drive for members from the minorities in Sweden? A more multi-cultural Police force, reflective of the areas it's in, will also find it easier to understand the communities and urban problems.

As the sun shone down on the roof terrace of Kulturhuset, Stockholm, I relaxed with an ice cold drink and enjoyed a simply electric performance from Sweden’s young Prince of Reggae, Junior Natural, me and about 30 other people. If you didn’t know there was a four day urban music event then you are one of the majority, and you really did miss out. Considering the number of promotional options available to the EU, promotion of this event was practically non-existent.
The EU-music Days are designed to help the promotion of urban music within Europe and discuss the experiences, problems and all other aspects of urban music. The event contained conferences, live shows and the urban film Festival, which we are sure you heard about…

Prosecutors have abandoned their investigation into the case of a Malmö police officer who uttered racist slurs during disturbances in the city'sRosengård district in December.
The officer was suspected of having committed agitation against ethnic groups (hets mot folkgrupp) in connection with police efforts to quell disturbances in which a number of people with immigrant backgrounds were involved.
While sitting in a police van, the officer used the term “blattajävlar”, an ethnic slur which translates roughly into “damn coloured people” or “damn immigrants”, in reference to a young people out on the streets.
