Putumayo Nights

Review: Faunafest & Putumayo Nights

As the smell of succulent seafood paella wafted over us, the candles flickering in the balcony above combined with music -best described as urban lounge- it was hard to believe I was at the same Faunafest & Putumayo Night event urbanlife had visited before. In September, we felt the buffet was at odds with the setting but now the selection was as delicious to smell as it was to eat, satisfying any tummy! Beautiful women and cool guys mingled with happy couples, and it was hard not to sense an air of romance. Any single people in Stockholm, tired of hanging out in bars filled with large numbers of Swedish kids under 25, would have felt at home here.

As usual, the incredibly talented Faunafest team had decorated Fashing impeccably and their collaborations with other artists adorned the walls with style. Artists, such as Ariel Diaz Garcia whose large artwork is best described as abstract jazz, was particularly inspiring. Ariel is a Cuban artist with incredibly long dreadlocks who lives in Oskarhamn.  "Where I live it's very peaceful and quiet so sometimes its hard to be inspired," he said, "but for this event it was no problem."

Ariels amazing artwork

Tonight we were to be served a total of six performances. The Tensta Gospel Choir, lead by Cedwin Sandanam, a dynamic and expressive choral conductor, gave us a wonderful soulful performance and was a personal highlight of the evening. A half-dressed Finnish singer who began with a striptease and ended playing a xylophone is not what you usually expect to see on a night out but it’s also what makes this night unique. The following act felt more like ‘Swedens got talent’ than the rest, with 2 exuberant guys performing magic with comedy, but they were very entertaining and the public and I joined in with their tomfoolery.

Putumayo’s Anette Walter who organised the event, was pleased with the atmosphere created but could not be certain if Putumayo Nights would continue, this would be a shame as it’s one of the most creative nights out in Stockholm, especially if you love surprises, great music and good food!
