In our efforts to be a ‘cool’ website most would not expect to see the name 'Allsång på Skansen' in our articles but that’s what makes Urbanlife different. We are constantly searching for the best of Afro-Swedish life and it’s influences in culture and you’d be surprised where you’d find it. 'Allsång på Skansen' is a show held at Skansen in Stockholm, every summer. The audience is encouraged to sing along to well-known Swedish songs chosen by the shows performers (yeah, I know, you’re asking where the cool part is).
The show started in 1935 with about fifty people in the audience but today boasts about 10 000-15 000 people at each performance every Tuesday evening.
Like kicking your feet in the sand- one day you’ll hit something and we were pleased to hear what happened when Classic Music met The King of Pop with a few others lesser groups like the Beatles, I think!
Watch the MozART GROUP from Poland below, consisting of; Filip Jaslar on first violin, Michal Sikorski - second violin, Pawel Kowaluk – viola and Bolek Blaszczyk on cello. Educated instrumentalists who graduated from prestigious Academies of Music in Warsaw, they decided to play classical music in a humorous way.

Houselegendaren Joe Claussell kommer till Stockholm för en spelning på klubben SoulMates. Fredag den 18:e juni tar han över på Strand med sitt afroinspirerade sound.
Joe Clausell är en av pionjärerna inom house och har varit med ända sedan genrens uppkomst i mitten av 80-talet. Han har haft en stor betydelse som dj, musiker, skivbolagsägare, klubbarangör och producent.
Förutom ett sound med afrikanska rötter så har akustiska liveelement en stor plats i Joe Claussells musik.
Så vill du uppleva tidlös housemusik, bege dig till Strand den 18:e juni.
To begin the beginning: Femi Kuti not only looks like his father Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti – the infamous Nigerian freedom fighter, sole founder of the free, somewhat anarchic Republic of Kalakuta, of the musical form Afrobeat, and the famous nightclub the Afrika Shrine, first cousin to Wole Soyinka, the first African to win a Nobel Prize, etc, etc – he sounds like him too, both in terms of vocal, textual, and instrumental expression. Or, as Femi says about himself, he speaks the truth, just like his father: “If I didn’t tell the truth, it would be a betrayal of my past. But I hope I’ll bring the struggle to an end in my lifetime.”
The concert in Stockholm starts in a very cool jazzy mood, almost quiet, and it is not for nothing that Femi asks us in the audience if we know who Edward Ellington was? Duke, we say! Who Charlie Parker was? Bird, we say. Who Billie Holiday was? Lady Day, we say. Who John Gillespie was? Dizzy, we say.
And Femi ends the conversation with the words: “Good, then you know where we’re coming from!” Father Fela joined the forces of Miles Davis, James Brown and High Life; of Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey and Kwame Nkrumah, and definitely put Nigeria on the musical map.
Stockholm kulturnatt närmar sig med stormsteg. För den som är sugen på afrobeat, nigeriansk funk, kuduro och dancehall kan Urbanlife rekommendera Selams kväll på Södra Bar den 24:e april. Klubben Outernational startar kvällen med en superblandning av olika genres. Du kommer kunna dansa dig svettig till bland annat hiphop, cumbia, latin soul, soca, kwaito, dancehall, sokouss och baile funk.
Sen tar afrobeatbandet Music is the Weapon över med sin patenterade nigerianska funk. Om du inte redan är svettig så kan du räkna med att bli det då.
Deras debutskiva, “Music is the Weapon”, blev nominerad till årets skiva i kategorin rytm på Manifestgalan 2010.
Så förvänta dig en kväll med tungt blås, funkiga rytmer och en kulturnatt med afrikanska förtecken. Plats: Södra Bar, Södra Teatern Tid: Showtime kl 23.00 Gratis entré fram till 22.00, därefter kostar det 60 kr.
