George Allyn Chockness - the calypso king of Sweden

Artists and friends pay tribute to percussionist George Allyn in a concert with Amadou Jarre & the High Life Orchestra, Rudy Smith, Babatunde Tony Ellis, French bassist Koffie Aivo, Taxi Stand Steel Band, Hotpans steel band and others.

Chockness, as he was called back home in Trinidad, was one of the two youngest players in the steel orchestra band Merrymakers. The band left Trinidad to tour Europe in the end of the 50’s. After being on tour for some years the band eventually split up. It was then that George and his friend Rudy "twoleft" Smith started their own band with George on drums. They played all over Europe. They finally settled in Sweden and created a much bigger orchestra, The Modern Sound, with some of the best musicians in Stockholm. Artists included Tony Ellis, Kofi Bensi-Enchell, Bill Prince, Ron Simmonds, Don Pancho and many others.
