Review: Ele concert

Ele i konsert

On Saturday evening soul singer Ele gave a strong performance in Kista church, backed by a five piece band. In shimmering candlelight the crowd enjoyed covers of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, as well as Ele’s own songs. It was quite clear that these two ladies are a big influence on the Swedish songstress, especially after hearing Ele’s version of Badu’s “Next Lifetime”. Ele’s voice however, resembles more of a smoother version of Chrisette Michelle.

Ele’s best performance of the evening does not come when singing covers of soul divas. Instead it is with her own song, “Everyday I”, then she and the band really convey emotions and the groove raises to a higher level, taking advantage of a strong chorus and a catchy beat.

EleAlthough the church isn’t packed to the last seat, Ele does her best to get the crowd to sing along to some of the tunes. The fact that she doesn’t succeed has more to do with the crowd’s lack of trust in their own voices than of Ele’s dedication. She also gives the performance a more intimate touch by not hesitating to reveal her own personal feelings and connections to the songs.

So with few exceptions Ele gave a very good performance in Kista this evening. The only thing one might wish for is a sound technician who could have turned the volume of Ele’s voice up a notch, because it is a voice that’s worth hearing.
