Do SVT and the makers of  "För alla åldrar" believe that this character on the children’s programme, Bolibompa, is acceptable in 2009?

För alla åldrar

As I sat watching TV with my children this very dark puppet character appeared, with a gold chain and huge red lips which to me felt like an obvious racist parody of a black person.
Is racism so ingrained in Sweden that no-one stopped and said – hang on guys, this isn’t right? Perhaps even more frightening is that they probably think it's funny.

'Political correctness gone mad' some of you may cry out as a way of avoiding the subject of my complaint. I’d be the first to admit that PC can go too far sometimes and the ability to laugh at our differences can be hindering but that's not what I’m talking about here. Yes I’m black but if they had shown a yellow character with slanted eyes I would have been equally offended. Racism is racism.

The continued use of crass caricatures like this only helps to confirm people’s negative stereotypes and increase racism in those already poorly educated.

I shall be writing a strong letter of complaint to SVT.

Are u sure its a parody Andy...well i was not born in Sweden and dont know much about Bolibompa, but i have seen a lot of other cartoon movies with black caracters in them and thought it was good that kids were being introduced to different entical groups in such early age in Sweden though...thats what I thought and I concider myself being quite sentitive to racism myself too..

have all of you really looked at the shows??? It is really good actually. Full of stereotypes but that is the purpose sort of. It is one of the better things produced in a loong time!

Should find another tree to bark at. Like the youtube link posted by admin above. That is sick shit!

David, there are other ways to communicate stereotypes to children than this. This isn\'t funny and I\'m not just looking for a stick to chase. Why aren\'t you laughing at the funny version of the Jackson Five? The audience had no problem with it.

The programme may be well produced but don\'t tell me they couldn\'t think of a smarter way to portray a black person than wide nosed, gold chains and big lipped!

My experience is that there is a very widespread, however, hidden racism in Sweden. In the finer classes of society is the term just more \"civilized\" but the content just as heinous as any racism.
I think it is sad that my license money goes to such rubbish.

I found the \"Bob and Bobek\" cartoon (that I mentioned) online (not in English or Swedish, but the pictures don\'t need translation)

You wouldn\'t be allowed to have a character like this in the UK and the US yet it is acceptable here?

And I hear you Anna but I don\'t want my children seeing this. If we accept this sort of image then we might as well accept this as well: www.youtube.com/watch?v=96YLZFbrMms

I haven\'t seen this particular programme that you are referring to Andy, and I am so glad I missed it, and more importantly: that my children missed it. This is far from the first time that SVT, Sweden\'s state-owned public TV is showing blatantly racist SHIT, while at the same time with sheepish smiles claiming to be promoting a multi-cultural society. Unbelievably hypocritical! Let me offer a few examples: A few years ago, “comedian” Henrik Schyffert made an outrageously racist parody character of Native Americans on the live broadcast of the finals in Melodifestivale n, much to the obvious delight of the live audience. The nature of the parody was such that had it been broadcast in the USA, they would have been sued so hard, and heads would have been rolling. The response in Sweden? Nothing. Apart from a handful of people, there was no outrage, no objection. On the contrary, shithead Henrik Schyffert made the character a regular feature in his show on Kanal 5 (Swedish commercial TV channel), which obviously was okayed by heads of Kanal 5. A few years ago, Bolibompa showed a cartoon called “Bob and Bobek in Africa”. The story started with that Bob and Bobek - two white rabbits - went to Africa, where they were chased by dark brown rabbits, who wanted to cook the two white rabbits and eat them. I reported the episode to the Swedish Broadcasting Commission (SBC), pointing out that it obviously propelled the colonial racist cliché of Africans being cannibals. But oh no, according to the conclusion of the SBC, the cartoon could not be offensive to anyone, and therefore it did not violate the provisions of the Radio and Television Act. Had they consulted any concerned party, such as Afrosvenskarnas Riksförbund (the National Association of Afro-Swedes)? Of course not! A bunch of people at the SBC, in all probability whites only, decided without a doubt that the cartoon could not be offensive to black people!!!! Then there’s the recent show “Den stora resan” which helps to advance the notion that Africans are primitive savages.

The worst of all though, is the impact this has on our children - all children, but Afro-Swedish children in particular! My six year-old son has already been exposed to derogatory and offensive comments from his mates! Small children are suffering from racist stereotypes, which are even promoted on public television! But the SBC, the bosses at SVT, and most Swedes for that matter don’t know, and they don’t care, because their own children are problably blond, white, and care-free…

Andy, you should write a letter of complaint, and then maybe you could post it so that as many people as possible can sign it as supporters of it?

I found the \"parody\" of Native Americans on Kanal 5 mentioned above too. Would this be considered okay by the Native American community? Would it be broadcast it in Canada or the USA?
