Differences between Caribbean, African and Swedish food and main food ingredients

Most Swedish food is known to be sustaining and depending on the local agricultural produce. The recipes are largely practical and the main focus is on nourishment as opposed to fancy decorations. In the northern Swedish regions you will typically find meals oriented around game such as Reindeer etc. while the southern regions focus on more vegetarian dishes. The presence of many mixed cultures in Sweden have also influenced the local cuisine here. This is why you find pizzas, sushis and modern café lattes going hand in hand here!

Typical, traditional Swedish food comprises an assortment of pork, potato, milk, cereals, fish, vegetables and fruits. Many spices get used but in moderation and some dishes require a lot of time to get cooked. Swedish people have three main meals and their dinner is very early at 5 in the evening. Compare this to traditional African food that comprises plantains, yams and cassava and you will quickly see the vast differences in the cuisines.

Rice, lentils and barley also get used a lot in African cooking. Spices such as cinnamon and clove are also used in traditional dishes of Africa. In Caribbean food, rice is the main dish accompanied with either vegetarian dishes or meat of some form.

The Caribbean Islands have been home to many influences like Dutch, French, African, Spanish, Indian, British and American and the resulting cuisine is a potpourri of these cultures. Chicken and goat are the primary meats eaten in the Caribbean and most dishes are cooked spicy and sweet.

Most basic ingredients found in African and Caribbean foods can be easily bought here in Sweden and the dishes really aren't difficult to make, so why wait, liven up your evening meal tonight!
