”What I hate most about you, Cyndee, and what I most admire about you, is that you know what you want!”

“If a Swedish woman was as ugly and fat as you are, she’d never have gotten as far.”

These are two of the best compliments I have received. No, I am not kidding you. It took me a while to understand it myself.

Make-overs

What not to wear

There seems to be no end to the series of TV shows about make-overs. My favorite is Pimp my Ride, those guys are geniuses, the Michelangelos of car repair and detailing. And of course you have the guy who hosts the program (I seriously think he needs to have his medication checked) where they make-over houses. Well not really, they usually just gut the whole thing and start over from scratch; so I don’t think that really qualifies as a make-over. That’s more like a do-over; but a transformation nonetheless.

The ones I watch with most fascination are those with the extremely rude English people. Why is it that the English are allowed to be rude, even vile like no one else, and we think it’s cool? I mean they grab at women’s boobs and let them flop all around for the whole world to see or poke at men’s double chins and love-handles like there were at a fruit stand.

It must have something to do with those accents.

You Can’t Get There

Map ReadingI stood with map in hand across from the smiling owner of the gas station somewhere in Washington, D.C. Before I could get the words of out my mouth, he said: “Lady, you can’t get there from here!” The look on my face made him only laugh louder and soon I joined in as he reached for the map and said, “Okay, where do you wanna go?”

Typical!

You know exactly where you want to go, in my case it was to Dulles International Airport for a flight back to Stockholm, but you’re lost.

I HATE being lost.

I am an admitted control freak and lost is a control freak's worst nightmare. I had mapped out a route for myself days before I was to leave and thought I ‘d found the best route from my sister’s place to the airport.

Just Stay On Your Knees

If you’ve been reading my articles, you know that I am a fan of Marianne Williamson. In one of her books she tells of when she, for the zillionth time, found herself on her knees once again asking God to help her out of a jam she had gotten herself into. She was praying up a storm, as my grandmother would’ve said, when suddenly it occurred to her, “You know what, Marianne? Why don’t you just stay on your knees!” She was on her way to a nervous breakdown.

Marianne describes that journey this way: “You know you’re headed for a nervous breakdown when your absolute last resort suddenly seems to be a very good idea.”

Connecting the Dots

Connecting the DotsI don’t know if, in the digital age, this still exists, but when I was a kid -- often in newspapers and puzzle books -- there was something called connect the dots. It was a fun way to learn how to count. With a pencil you started with the number l, then had to draw a line to the number 2, and then to number 3, and so on until a picture was formed. Simple, very pedagogical and it was lots of fun. If you followed the rules, connecting the numbers in the right order, you’d get your reward.

Some things in life are exactly the same way.

Surrender Makes You Strong

SurrenderI know this can sounds like a contradiction in terms, but I don’t feel that it is. I mean, think about it.

When you’ve spent both your energy and time in resisting something you knew you couldn’t change no matter how much effort you put into it, in the end did it make you feel powerful or did it make you feel weak?

What Others Think

What other people think about you is none of your business.
You do know that, don’t you?

And do you know that whatever opinion people have of you, good or bad, that is exactly what it is: an opinion. Their opinions, together with $2.00, will get them a ride on a New York City bus.

That is a powerful thing to realize. It took decades for that to fasten onto the inside of my brain.
