![]() But this time he's on screen and not in the ring. Director James Toback’s has filmed a portrait of one of the greatest and uniquely controversial boxers of all time, Iron Mike Tyson. Feared, loathed and hated, Tyson has done as much good as he has harm to the sport of boxing but now we get to see the real Mike Tyson as he reveals himself without inhibition and with eloquence and a pervasive vulnerability. I admit to being an admirer of Tyson when he was at his peak. I recall reading an interview with him and LL Cool J. Tyson came across as a smart, mild manner person and nothing like the image he portrayed in the ring. Anyone who remembers his soft, lisping voice would have easily come to the same conclusion but how wrong I was. I despised him after the rape charge. The ‘ear-biting’ incident only re-affirmed this. Could this film change my opinion again? The film is comprised of original interviews and archival footage and photographs, revealing a startlingly complex, well-rounded human being. We are invited to see all aspects of Tyson’s life from growing up on the mean streets of Brooklyn through his entry into the world of boxing, to his crazy world of worldwide fame and huge fortunes won and lost. Was he a man driven to self-destruct or did fame simply create a monster? Expect a very interesting and revealing film. [BACK] |

The question is whether or not we, as spectators, can recognize the Iron Mike within ourselves and dare to form or reform ourselves.
